UPA also tends to place volunteers in some of its branches so that members in these also benefit from the volunteer programme. This is to begin
with five branches of the organization out of the 10 that are established.
Apac branch
Background
Apac UPA branch is in the northern part of the country. It is a distance of 80km from the capital city Kampala. The community is friendly
and would wish to associate with foreigners. The security in the area is good, and accommodation will be provided at the branch which is located 2km
from Apac town. The place can be accessed by a bus that is boarded from Kampala.
Aim
To promote community based development, intercultural development and youth participation in voluntary work.
Activities
- Construction of a youth Centre, complemented with ICT that shall render resource center services, agricultural information, collective agro-processing,
packaging and marketing organic products
- Adult literary program
- Monitoring the utilization of Poverty Action Funds, specifically education funds
Volunteer task
- Teaching primary school children, English, sports.
- Teaching a women’s group English.
Agriculture
- Help constructing a farmers centre.
- Marketing of organic products.
- Work with youth and women’s group on sustaining small scale farm activities.
Capacity building
- Gender. Assist the Branch in drawing up a Gender policy and implement Gender Responsive Budgeting.
- Monitoring and evaluation. Develop and strengthen monitoring and evaluation procedures for the Branch and the specific activities.
Information activities
- Strengthen the voices of the poor
Volunteer qualities

The volunteer must be ready to live in a rural area, with basic necessities available. The contact person speaks English but not all members do.

The volunteer will travel together with the volunteer coordinator by bus for 6 hours from Kampala
Accomodation
This is with a Host family. The volunteer will get his/her own room in a brick house.
Comments from UPA
The branch is full of young people that we feel are willing to learn from those coming from outside the country. Although
the area has been affected by war in the last 20 years, it is peaceful now and very safe to live in.
Communication
The community are Langi tribe and a number of them speak English
Past Volunteers
The Branch has hosted one dutch volunteer on the a mid term basis. It has also been hosting those engaged in short term projects of
2-3 weeks.
