Primary Schools

Background

Volunteers can also be placed at various schools in Kampala and Nansana.

The school system in Uganda begins at the age of 3 when a child goes to Nursery school. At 5 years, they join primary school which is equal to grade school in Europe and America, then Secondary School and University. The volunteer can teach pupils of age 7 - 12, the subjects of Math and English.

Aim

Improve literacy and give the volunteer a feel of the education system in Uganda.

Activities

  • Teach children of the ages 4-12 years in the subjects of Math and English.
  • Play games with children for example sports.

Volunteer task

At these schools it is possible to teach English and Mathematics.

Working hours

The working hours depend on the time table that the school will give to the volunteer and how much time there are willing to work.

Transport

Public transport or by foot or a taxi will take you 10mins.

Accomodation

The volunteer will be hosted at the UPA guesthouse in Nansana, the different primary schools can easily be reached from here by public transport or by foot.

Comments from UPA

A volunteer can teach and also be able to engage in other volunteer projects since the teaching will be for only 3 hours or specific days agreed at the start of the project.

Communication

Most of the children that are the ages of 7-12 will be able to speak English. The teachers at the school also speak English.
